Heavy load in the Peruvian mountains

Exceptional transport in exceptional surroundings: The team at Transportes Hagemsa from Arequipa in Peru has accomplished a logistical feat with its ModulMAX axle lines from Faymonville, which, due to its complexity, has gone down in the company’s history and that of the Peruvian transport sector. Various components for a mine operation needed to be transported.

The route from the harbour in Salaverry to 4,300 metres above sea level, at the heart of Cordillera de los Andes, passed through challenging terrain, which stretched man and material equally. Tight bends, extreme inclines and changing weather conditions required ultimate precision, experience and determination.

On strong shoulders

„This project was a real touchstone for our technical and logistical expertise. We transport heavy and oversized components and make use of the outstanding quality of Faymonville technology to do so,“ explains Emerson Erquinigo Torres, Deputy Sales Director at Transportes Hagemsa.

For one of these components, 16 ModulMAX axle lines – a combination of two 6-axle modules and a 4-axle module including gooseneck – were coupled together. Altogether, Hagemsa owns 24 such lines from Faymonville. These vehicles are designed for offroad and normal road use, with a base width of 3,000 millimetres and 215/75 R17.5 twin tyres. The mechanically steered axles showed all their strength under the extreme conditions in the Andes.

With an axle load of up to 45 tonnes per line, the modules demonstrated impressive robustness and stability. Each axle line consists of two independent sets of wheels with pendle-axles, which compensate for uneven ground due to their pendulum bearing arrangement. This ensures optimal contact with the ground, even tyre pressure and a largely horizontal loading platform – even over the most difficult terrain.

Record project in Peru

„With our axle lines, the support of a multidisciplinary engineering team and the precise execution of complex manoeuvres, we accomplished a feat of logistics – a record project for Peru,“ according to Ronaldo Quispe Zavalaga, Marketing Manager at Transportes Hagemsa.

Transportes Hagemsa, founded in 1998 by brothers Richard and Wilfredo Erquinigo Pereda, is one of the leading companies today for heavy transport and integrated logistics in South America. With more than 800 employees and seven sites, the company offers efficient solutions in the fields of transport, logistics, international transport and hiring out special equipment. Hagemsa is ready for big challenges, because as its motto says: „Where there’s a will, there’s a way.“

Did you already know that …

... the ModulMAX also comes in a self-propelled version with electronically controlled steering system? All axles are controlled by a central system. It is possible to select between different steering modes. In this way, it is very easy to work in tight areas. Because this steering system enables a steering angle of +/- 140 degrees.
