Steel giant on green mission

In the Spanish town of Fene, on the premises of the traditional Navantia shipyard, ultimate precision was recently required: for the East Anglia Three offshore wind power project, Navantia Seanergies handled the internal transportation of gigantic XXL monopiles – 80 metres long, 10.6 metres in diameter and weighing around 2,000 tonnes. These elements form the foundations of a wind farm in the North Sea, around 69 kilometres from the coast of Suffolk in the United Kingdom.

In order to move these enormous structures safely, two electronically steered 12-axle Cometto SPMTs with power pack, coupled in parallel, are used. The electronically controlled modules offer maximum manoeuvrability with a steering angle of +135/-135 degrees, perfectly tailored to the requirements of such demanding projects. With the production of 45 XXL monopiles in total, Navantia Seanergies is playing a key role in this major project.

Precision even in the tightest space

The transportation took place within the Navantia shipyard premises and combined key work areas such as the production hall, paint booth and quay. Each transport process covered distances from 500 to 1,500 metres. A logistical feat that demanded ultimate safety and perfect coordination. Coordinating the transport, with multiple activities taking place at once in the shipyard, proved particularly challenging. „Close communication between the teams was crucial for maintaining efficiency and safety,“ explains José Manuel Ferreño Sesto, Production Manager at Navantia Seanergies.

The Cometto MSPE system proved to be an indispensable partner during the process: Its modular design, reliability and adaptability guarantee precise manoeuvring, stability and safety, even under challenging conditions.

Energy for a greener future

Navantia Seanergies plays a key role in the development of renewable energies. The company positions itself as an international partner with expertise in offshore wind power and hydrogen technologies. In the three Spanish sites in Fene, Puerto Real and Cartagena, the Green Energy Centre of Excellence brings together plenty of know-how and innovation in order to push projects forward together with partners worldwide – from Europe and America to Asia and Australia.

Or, as Navantia Seanergies puts it: Better energies for a better world.
